Rembrandt -

What effect does it create?

 It creates triangular highlighting on the shadowed cheek of the subject, the face is kind of slip between dark and highlighted.

Why use it?

 If you are trying to create a sense of mystery, drama or to evoke a dark mood.
How many lights or light sources?

 You would need one Key light and a fill light to get an adequate shadow- side.

Loop -

What effect does it create?

it creates a nose shadow on the subjects cheek

Why use it?

 It can be use for average oval faces.

How many lights or light sources?

 At least two lights.

Butterfly (or Paramount) - 

What effect does it create?

 a makes a shadow under the nose and the chin.

Why use it?

 Its used for glamour styles shots.

How many lights or light sources?

 you can use one light.

Split -

What effect does it create?

 It divides the face almost completely light and shadow.

Why use it?

It can help emphasis, communicate a personality.

How many lights or light sources?

 You would use one light.

Broad and Short -

What effect does it create?

The broad side of the subjects face is completely lid.

Why use it?

 It can help someone with very slim face look broad. ( not ideal for a person with a wide face)

How many lights or light sources?

 You can do it with one light, but use a second light to soften the shadows.
